Vivian Avraamidou Ploumbis

Author · Columnist

I write fiction inspired by people, places and moments in history. My stories often begin with something real — a photograph, a document, a place, a forgotten event — and continue where imagination takes over.

About Me

I was born in Famagusta, Cyprus, and have lived in Athens, Seattle and, for many years, Prague.

I write novels and short stories, often starting from something that catches my attention — a place, a photograph, a historical event, a real person or a human story asking to be told.

My books have received literary awards in Cyprus and Greece and have been translated into several languages.

Testimonials

Dimitris Kargiotis

Professor of Comparative Literature

“Avraamidou’s fiction transforms historical material into literature, illuminating history through the subjective dimension of human experience — its existential, psychological and emotional fluctuations.”

Kostas G. Papageorgiou

Poet & Literary Critic — on The Soul of Gold

“The author combines fiction and history in just the right proportions. The result is a particularly successful work of historical fiction.”

Tefcros Michaelides

Mathematician · Author

on Haunting Voices

“It took extraordinary courage for Vivian to revisit, in her imagination, her city on the first day of the looting — and extraordinary generosity of spirit to imagine a soldier from the other side who was different from the rest.”

Laura Royo Torres

on Haunting Voices

“More than once, I had to put the book down, overwhelmed by the depth of emotion it evoked. It may be a short book, but it is not one to be read quickly.”
